The Trenton Thunder, playing a lineup largely bereft of actual prospects, defeated the Akron Aeros by the score of 5-1 on Sunday evening.

The Thunder won on the strength of prospect Nik Turley‘s pitching and by taking advantage of some Akron miscues. (I know batting average doesn’t tell the whole story, but just three Thunder players finished the game with averages above .250 and none had batting averages of .260 or better.)

Jose Gil (204 games over five seasons), Reegie Corona (318 games over four seasons) and Jose Pirela (314 games over three seasons) made me wonder who holds the career record for most games played for the Trenton Thunder. According to the team’s media guide, Virgil Chavalier set the franchise mark at 371 games between 1998 and 2001 when the Thunder were still a Red Sox affiliate. Corona and Pirela now hold the number four and five spots.

I also got a few autographs before the game. Francisco Lindor was not in this year’s Akron Aeros team set, so I ended up asking him to sign my ticket.

  1. Wow. Jose Gil is back? He signed with the Orioles in the off-season, was released and signed with an indepenent American Association league team and now the Yankees picked him back-up.
